Bare Root Perennials- How do I plant the roots?
Plant in a container with a well-drained media, or in prepared soil. Soil should have high organic content, and be well drained. A slow release balanced fertilizer can be added to the soil. Generally, the crown should be just at or below the soil surface. Do not over water.
Bare Root Perennials- How will my plants arrive?
Plants are dug in late fall, after they are dormant. The soil is washed off, the plants are divided to a uniform size and packed in bags of 25 with peat. The bags are packed in corrugated cartons are shipped via UPS to your door.
Bare Root Perennials- What should I do if I do not receive all my order?
Boxes may arrive on different days. If your entire order does not arrive within 2-3 days of the first box arriving, please call so we may track your shipment. In the event your shipment is delayed, damaged, or lost, please notify UPS and Northwest Bulb & Perennial immediately so a claim can be filed. We will try to replace the missing plants, or refund the lost amount.

Foreign Shipments:Bare Root Perennials- What should I do when my plants arrive?
Open your boxes of bare root perennials as soon as they arrive. If the roots look dry, soak them in a bucket of water. If they are frozen, allow them to thaw slowly in a cool room (50? F.) If you are not able to plant immediately, store the unopened boxes in a cool area for up to a week.

Bare root perennials are shipped January through May. If planting outside, time delivery after the last frost. Planting can be timed much earlier with a little protection from a greenhouse or cold frame.

Bulbs are bulk packed in corrugated cartons and shipped via UPS to your door.

Plant bulbs as soon as possible after arrival. If bulbs cannot be planted immediately, store at 41?- 48? F for no longer than 2 weeks

A slow release balanced fertilizer can be added to the soil. Time your delivery date for fall bulbs so the soil temperature is below 60? F. Optimum soil temperature is 48? F or below. As a general rule, planting depth should be 3 times the diameter of the bulb.

Fall bulbs are shipped September through December. We will send your bulbs as close to your requested ship date as possible.
How Many Plants Should I Order?
Perennials, groundcovers, and shrubs need to be spaced according to their ultimate size.
For the most part, garden plant spacing comes down to personal taste and what you want in a landscape. The following are some general guidelines for plant spacing.
The first thing is to determine the dimension of your planting area. Keep in mind that closer spacing will:
- Allow plants to fill in more quickly
- Discourages weeds
- Helps shade the soil, thus reducing evaporation
Perennials
As a general rule, the average spacing for perennials are 12" on center.
Ground Covers
Ground Covers should be spaced from 6-12" apart depending on the variety and how quickly you want to fill the area.
Taller Plants, Shrubs
When planting for shrubs and taller perennials, consider their ultimate spread.
Take the overall plant height and divide by half. (Example: 48/2=24). 24 inches is the spacing distance you can use between plants.
How do I know if a plant is hardy in my area?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has devised a system to provide gardeners with a basic guide to plant hardiness. The Hardiness Zone Map system divides the United States and Canada into numbered zones based on lowest average winter temperature. Even within a zone, different micro-climates exist, such as large urban areas which may be warmer or land situated at different elevations.
What Effects Plant Hardiness?
The Hardiness Zone Map is a valuable tool but it is not foolproof. There are a variety of factors that can influence the hardiness of a given plant in a garden. These factors include: soil type, drainage, snow cover, exposure to wind, winter, rainfall (or lack of), as well as fluctuations in temperature.

How early can I plant?
The plants you receive should be able to handle a light freeze. Refer to our delivery schedule for recommendations on when to purchase. If you are still in doubt, let us assist you.
Do I need to prepare my soil?
We just can't help but re-emphasizing the importance of soil preparation. If you think of plants as your children, they need nutrients and room to grow.
How often should I water?
A general rule of thumb is to water about 1 inch a week. It is critical that the first year or with newly planted material you don't skimp on watering. Mature, second year plants have roots that run deep into the soil, so their watering needs may be a lot less.When we mention that a plant is drought tolerant, we refer to an established second year plant. If your plants begin to wilt, it is time to water.
Will my plants flower the first year?
As a general rule, you will enjoy flowers the first year with plants from Northwest Bulb & Perennial provided they are planted early enough in the spring season to become established.
